Observation #8

Date: May 29, 2008

Location: Mike Yokel Park

Weather: Cloudy and looks like it's going to rain.

Temperature: 45 degrees

Time: 7:00

Last Observation ever! There is definitely a difference in my are since the first time i came. Before there was no water in the creek and now there is! The grass was all dry and now it is all wet and moist and green. The grass has grown since the first time i came. The trees have been blooming since winter, so it looks like spring. The trees have buds on them and it looks like they have bloomed. There is not that many animals. This isn't a very good habitat for animals since there is not a lot of food for animals around here. That is probably why i haven't seen many animals around here. This isn't a very good environment it is better for people because there are things they can do. Last observation WHOOOOOOOOOOO!

Observation #7

Date: Wednesday May 28, 2008

Location: Mike Yokel Park

Time: 4:25 p.m.

Weather: Rainy and Cloudy :(

There is water in the creek! There is actually a lot of water. The water looks kind of dirty probably due to all of the dirty snow that melted and went into the creek. The grass is definitely greener and it seems like it has grown since last time i have come. There is not much biodiversity in the area. I don't know why, maybe due to the weather. It seems like there were some people around this area because i see food wrappers. This can effect the environment and its Biotic factors, like the animals. The animals can eat it and they can die!

Flora Report- Dandelions
The common name for my flower is known as a Dandelion. It’s scientific name is Taraxacum officinale they are the most common weed in the world. The leaves are 5-25 cm long. The roots are up to ½ inch in diameter. Many dandelions are asexual. The seeds are produced without any pollination. Dandelions usually come out during the spring and are usually around until Summer.
The top of the flower is usually all just yellow. They are most common in the western part of the United States, mostly where it is warm. Dandelions usually have pointy stems and leaves that are also pointy and sharp. They are found on the end of a hollow stalk.
Dandelions are usually found in lawns, pastures and vacant lots. They provide food for many kinds of organisms. Like bees with out their pollination they wouldn’t have honey. They take up lots of empty space and space that may be needed for other things like construction. This makes it harder for organisms, like bees, to get the resources that they need. They create a whole new environment around themselves.

Observation #6

Date: May 22, 2008

Location: Mike Yokel Park

Temperature: 45 Degrees

Weather: Light Rain

Soil: Wet

It is raining and i think the creek is going to be filling up because many floods have been going on and the snow is melting. The grass is obviously wet because it is raining. You can't really tell anything is going on because of the weather conditions. Many organism are not around because of it. I think all of the organisms are in their homes trying not get wet. The weather makes it hard for them to get the resources they need. There are more weeds like Dandelions. Its seems like they have multiplied.

Observation #5

Date: May 20, 2008

Location: Mike Yokel Park

Temperature: 52°

Weather: Warm But, Cloudy

My area looks sort of different. The grass is greener and seems taller. The trees look like they are growing and there are buds on the trees they are a pink green color. There is not much biodiversity just some ants and some other insects. The creek is still unbelievably dry, hopefully the water level rises or at least some water is in the creek. There is less patches of dry grass. There is not many survival needs for big animals maybe that is why there are no chipmunks or squirrels. There is no water and there is not much food for other organisms. The einviroment is just barely now starting to grow.

Formica aerata also known as field ants are common in many places. They travel in large colonies and they nest in soil. Most field ants are usually found in people’s homes and buildings. They are also found on patios and front porches.
Most people confuse them with another kind of ant which is a Carpenter ant they look almost exactly the same but just a different color. Field ants a brownish-black color. They are also known as a Worker Ant.
Ants feed on other small insects as well as the nectar of flowers. However ants are also considered prey themselves. Their predators are cicadas and certain species spiders. Many ants are hard to reach since they nest in the soil and they live in colonies. Ants usually come out during the spring or summer seasons. Some, of them live in anthills. They take over unused land and make anthills.
During spring and summer they take over unused land and make lots of anthills. During those two seasons are when most flowers try to bloom and more insects and animals come out after a long winter. Due to anthills, they don’t allow new flowers to come in, limiting the vegetation doesn’t come in. But, a benefit they do is that new animals come in to use that area and they create a whole new environment with different animals and insects. They also nest under rocks, patio blocks, and firewood piles. With all of these different areas that they nest in there are different kinds of insects and they create a new niche.
